Global Maritime employees worldwide recently participated in the annual Marcothon, a charity running event where they committed to running 5 km on average daily for a month.

In recognition of those who completed the challenge, Arild Grønevik, Senior Naval Architect, was randomly chosen from the pool of finishers to select a charity for the donation. Arild nominated Sungai Watch as the recipient of the funds, with the team’s collective efforts raising an impressive 44,112 NOK for the cause.

Sungai Watch work to prevent plastic pollution from entering the ocean by developing innovative solutions and aims to install 1,000 trash barriers in Indonesia’s most polluted rivers.

Arild commented, “Our oceans are overwhelmed by plastic waste and stopping it before it reaches the ocean is crucial. On behalf of everyone who ran for charity in December, I believe protecting marine life and preserving our environment for future generations is a cause worth supporting."

Sungai Watch said, ‘’We’re delighted to share that your potential contribution of 3,860 USD will significantly support the core operations of Sungai Watch in 2025. Our operations lie at the heart of our mission to stop plastic pollution in rivers and oceans. With a team of 155 dedicated individuals across 10 stations in Indonesia, we operate a large-scale system that includes trash barrier installations, waste collection, sorting, and upcycling. This infrastructure allows us to intercept, process, and manage vast amounts of waste daily, preventing it from entering the ocean while fostering local community engagement. Your support will directly contribute to maintaining this complex system, ensuring the smooth running of day-to-day operations. From equipping our teams with the tools and gear needed to collect and sort waste efficiently to maintaining and scaling our waste management network, your funding plays a vital role in enabling the impactful work we do every day.’’

Asbjørn Pedersen, Naval Architect, shared his thoughts on the GM Marcothon experience, "This is my first time doing the Marcothon challenge, and I must say, it has been awesome doing it with so many active colleagues from GM. The challenge has been motivating—not only because we’re running for charity but also because it encourages us to get outside and stay active during the dark and cold December days. The added motivation from GM sponsoring every kilometer, regardless of whether we hit the daily target or not, pushed me to go further on some of the days. It’s been a fantastic initiative, and I look forward to seeing more of the Marcothon in the future."
