Meet Borja Franqueira! Based in Madrid, Borja is a Naval Architect working across Engineering and Business Development to deliver innovative offshore and marine solutions. Since joining the company, Borja has contributed to a wide range of projects, spanning technical design and commercial strategy. His lifelong connection to the ocean - shaped by years of surfing and a fascination with ships - sparked an enduring interest in how vast structures stay afloat. That passion ultimately led him to naval architecture, and today it drives his commitment to advancing safer, more sustainable offshore operations.
What inspired you to pursue a career in offshore and marine services?
The ocean has always been part of who I am — I’ve spent my life close to it, surfing and admiring ships from a young age. I was fascinated by how something built from steel could float and withstand the forces of nature. That curiosity naturally grew into a passion for naval engineering. Working in offshore and marine services allows me to stay connected to the sea while contributing to projects that are key to both energy and environmental progress.
Could you tell us what your role in Global Maritime entails?
As a Naval Architect at Global Maritime, I’m involved in technical analyses, stability assessments, and engineering support for offshore and marine operations. At the same time, I collaborate with the Business Development team to identify opportunities in both traditional and renewable energy markets. This dual role allows me to merge my technical background with strategic thinking — gaining a full view of how engineering decisions shape the broader offshore industry.
What standout projects have you worked on, and how have they helped shape your skills or career journey?
I’ve been fortunate to work on projects spanning oil and gas as well as offshore renewables. These have challenged me to apply technical knowledge in diverse environments — from vessel operations to early-stage design studies. They’ve also shown me how important it is to balance innovation with safety and efficiency. Each project has helped me grow as an engineer and strengthened my commitment to contributing to a safer, more sustainable maritime industry.
Can you share a moment when you felt your work directly contributed to a more sustainable future?
Working on feasibility studies and technical analyses for offshore wind projects has been one of the most rewarding parts of my job. Knowing that our engineering work supports the development of renewable energy at sea — and helps clients operate more safely and efficiently — makes me proud. It’s fulfilling to see how technical expertise can directly contribute to reducing carbon emissions and shaping the future of clean energy.
What do you enjoy most about working at Global Maritime?
What I enjoy most is the combination of teamwork, technical depth, and variety. Every project brings a new challenge — from traditional marine operations to renewable developments — whilst constantly learning from experienced colleagues. As a young engineer, being part of a company that values knowledge sharing and embraces the energy transition motivates me every day. It’s the perfect environment to grow and make a real impact in the offshore world.
